Lewis County Central Elementary School
Vanceburg, KY

Lewis County Central Elementary School is a new 65,000 s.f., two-story facility serving the city of Vanceburg. The scope of work incorporates the entirety of the programming set forth by the Kentucky Department of Education along with unique design features that foster a sense of school pride for the community.

The building is oriented in the landscape in a way that frames out a central courtyard students will be able to enjoy, whether used for recess or outdoor learning environments. The entrance of the school utilizes a gracious exposed structure canopy to welcome incoming guests. Upon entering the school, students pass through a security vestibule monitored by the adjacent office as they are welcomed into a large double height commons area. This space acts as a circulation hub from the entrance, main classroom corridor, Media Center, Second Floor, and the Gymnasium/cafeteria. The building features exposed structure to take advantage of dramatic ceiling heights and a more open space.

A large design component of the project is bringing natural light inside through appropriately-placed large areas of glass to not only light the space, but also provide views of the surrounding landscape, and in turn, embracing the school’s ties to the Vanceburg community.
