Magoffin County High School
Salyersville, KY

In response to a devastating tornado that hit Salyersville in March of 2012, the Magoffin County School District had to completely re-establish their educational facilities. The new Magoffin County High School provides an inspiring environment for both its students and the Salyersville community at large.

Utilizing existing site topography, an amphitheater was designed at the back of the structure to offer an exterior gathering space for academics and student interaction. The major program spaces are organized around a central lobby, providing collaborative circulation for the diverse curriculum. The ample cafeteria overlooks the landscape and athletic complex toward the rear, and a glass wall toward the lobby opens to create a large gathering space for both school and community use.

The building is designed to meet Energy Star standards and exceed energy code requirements, achieved with the use of a high efficiency HVAC system, light control systems, LED lights and active day lighting sources to reduce electrical demands.
