Currently In Progress

The adaptive re-use project for repurposing existing buildings into a STEAM Academy in Eastern Kentucky embodies a multifaceted approach to community development and education. Integrating contemporary and sustainable, and resilient design features, the renovated structures serve as a dynamic hub for accelerating economic growth and innovation in the region. Embracing the raw aesthetic of the older building interior spaces and structure, the design not only preserves the architectural heritage but also fosters a unique learning environment that inspires creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration among students and faculty.

The buildings offer new educational spaces on two floors. New stairs, new elevator and a double height maker/event space anchor the open flexible collaborative educational spaces. All new energy efficient building systems are planned for increased indoor air quality, utilizing roof mounted photovoltaic panels on the roof for power generation as well as refurbished concrete and wood flooring, additional structural supports for new spaces and secure features for modern school safety enhancements.

Aligned with the needs of the community of Paintsville, the curriculum will be tailored to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the modern economy. Through hands-on learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics, students will be empowered to become drivers of economic development and agents of positive change in their communities. By leveraging the adaptive re-use of existing buildings as a platform for education and innovation, this transformative project not only enriches the educational landscape but also catalyzes sustainable economic growth and prosperity throughout Eastern Kentucky.
